Trust the Process

Advice from a colleague in the early days of my business.

Hey there -

“Trust the process.”

Advice from a colleague in the early days of my business.

It’s good advice.

If you can figure out what it means.

It’s taken me a while to land on a definition that I can wrap my brain around: I am not in control of outcomes.

If I trust that things are unfolding the way that they are supposed to. If I trust that clients will make the decisions that make the most sense for them (regardless of what I want!).  More importantly, if I trust myself and that I know what is best for me, then solutions, results, decisions, conclusions, events, and the like get resolved.

Not always the way I would like, mind you. But that’s the point.

Trusting the process doesn’t necessarily mean we get our way. It means there is something bigger and greater than us in play.

I’m thinking again about the mountain range analogy. If you look at a mountain range, your viewpoint is only so wide. The range extends much further than the eye can see. But we trust that it’s there.

Every day I bear witness to leaders who have a need, desire, or automatic default to forcing some outcome or solution. This looks different for all of us, and the belief or behavior is usually anchored in our lived experiences.

For instance, if you grew up in an environment where you weren't listened to, you might keep repeating yourself in team meetings to push for the result you're looking for. Or maybe you overextend yourself to your own demise to help someone because you have a vested interest in the outcome going a certain way.

These are just two small examples. You’ll have your own brand of what it might look like for you.

Trusting the process is the opposite.  And there's a benefit to stepping into that trust a little bit more.

What will it take to trust the process this week?

Have a great week!
